Top London stylist Karine Jackson gives fringe tips
According to Karine, there is a fringe shape to suit everyone, but there are some key points to remember for your clients who might be a little apprehensive about trying a fringe…
Top tips for great fringes:
- Small faces should wear short, choppy fringes to match short and choppy styles
- Small face and small features? Then a short and straight fringe will look great
- Sweeping fringes do wonders to soften harsh faces or features
- Long and textured fringes give round faces a more flattering shape
- The ‘flick’ can widen a thin face
- A big, bold fringe can give extra height!
- Big facial features can be softened with a sweeping fringe
Shapes and styles to avoid:
- Short fringes can make a big forehead look bigger
- If your client has a strong cow-lick dead straight fringes will not do!
Maintenance and styling tips:
- Regular fringe trims are important, every 3 weeks in a good marker
- Long, grown out fringes can look messy and even greasy
- Karine Jackson offers complimentary fringe trims to her regular clients (a great tip to increase your clients loyalty!)
- Gentle cow-licks tame well with water-based gel on the roots and then rub down with fingers
- A good blow-dry which pays attention to a quick drying fringe will prolong the hold
- To straighten a fringe, blow-dry down the hair shaft avoiding too much movement as this creates volume
- For flicks, use a round or barrel brush hold the brush in place while the heat from the dryer cools
- Most importantly, try and discourage your clients from choosing a fringe which they can hide behind – it will be obvious what they are doing! Instead, help them think about trying one that will really benefit their face shape and features!
